Unfolding over the course of a day, workshop participants - armed with blank film, scotch tape and a bucket of water - will learn to “paste” printed matter onto 16mm film frames, each ultimately producing a short loop (approximately ten seconds in length) of printed materials sourced from local newspapers, books and other graphic ephemera.
After a brief introduction, the class will begin with a 16mm screening of Bedtime Story (Shatavsky, 1983) acquainting students with historical direct animation techniques and situating direct animation within the tradition of experimental and avant-garde art.
Following this, instructors will explain the proper orientation of the 16mm film image and how the film runs through the projector. Frame rate, duplication and movement are also considered and discussed as phenomena. Each student is then given a set amount of film material, which is worked on over the course of the day using the animation materials provided by the workshop instructors.
At the end of the work period, each participant’s work will be projected on a loop for all to enjoy.
This workshop is suitable for students of all ages and experience levels! Students do not need to stay the full day. Drop-ins are welcome. The suggested participation fee is $25 at the door, with no one turned away for lack of funds. Please reach out to info@institute193.org with any questions.
