Appalachian Voices + Dunahoo
Institute 193 recently collaborated with Jim James, Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore to install works by Jessie Dunahoo on stage at the opening of their Appalachian Voices US tour. Jessie Dunahoo is a blind and deaf artist who works at Lexington’s Latitude Artist Community and recently showed at 193’s space on North Limestone Street. We are posting video excerpts and photos from the show below. Special thanks to Latitude Artist Community (specifically to Bruce Burris and Crystal Bader) who are always willing to help the Institute any way they can. The show took place on July 22, 2010 at the Lexington Opera House.

Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore: Benefit for Institute 193
Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore performed at the Red Mile Round Barn on November 28, 2009 in Lexington, Kentucky to benefit Institute 193. Both musicians played separate sets, but then joined together to perform songs from their new album entitled DEAR COMPANION, an album dealing with mountaintop removal. Sales from DEAR COMPANION will benefit Appalachian Voices, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal. Sollee agreed to play the show, despite it being his birthday. We did, however, manage to come up with a cake complete with trick candles and oreo cookies. Not bad for a non-profit and a couple of Kentucky boys. All photos were taken by Tom Eblen, a blogger and staff writer for the Lexington Herald-Leader. For more information about Sollee and Moore’s joint album, go to: http://www.subpop.com/releases/ben_sollee_and_daniel_martin_moore/full_lengths/dear_companion.
A large part of the Institute’s mission is to create meaningful dialogue between musicians and visual artists resulting in joint projects, album artwork commissions and general collaboration. Let’s get something going…. Write an email to info@institute193.org with proposed projects, etc…
